+1 SIGNIFICANT OTHERS

(April 2014)

I have always been curious about the way friends and partners (even dog-owners and their dogs!) start to look more and more like each other over time.  That is why in my most recent project, ‘+1: Significant Others’ I have pointed my camera at several stylish duos, to investigate this style mimicry.  The 5 different episodes portray 5 duos -- partners, friends, romantic couples, and family members -- at different ages and stages in their lives.  Together these 5 portraits tell a story of the role of ‘Significant Others’ (as they are called in sociology) in the forming and sustaining of personal identity.  The series was launched this March on the website of the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant. To accompany the video's photographer Yvonne Brandwijk and myself made a photo-interview series of Dutch Style twins that appeared in the fashion-edition of the 'Volkskrant Magazine'.

(February 2014)

For the last several months I have been working on a series of ethnographic research videos for Vlisco, the Dutch company that makes wax-print fabrics, which are popular all over West Africa. The different videos portray several women that buy Vlisco fabrics and visualize their ongoing relationship with the brand. First I followed 3 Afropolitan women in New York, and then several different women in Accra (Ghana).  The purpose of the videos is to help everyone within the organization to better understand their target audience.

If you are interested in watching these video's please email me and I will provide you with a password protected link.
